Churches Press Government for Sustainable Peace in Afghanistan – Human Rights Day – December 10, 2009)

The Canadian Council of Churches calls on Canada to mount a new peace mission in Afghanistan that focuses on two priorities:

  1. support Afghans in implementing participatory reconciliation programs and responsive governance at district and local levels;
  2. urge the international community to pursue diplomatic efforts to end the war.

Canadian Church Leaders Encourage the Pursuit of Peace in Afghanistan – August 16, 2007

12 Canadian church leaders wrote today to the Prime Minister to encourage the Government of Canada in its pursuit of peace in Afghanistan today. Following on a collaborative process of consultation and learning lasting more than a year, they offer their contribution to the dialogue in Canada on moving Afghanistan forward to a long-lasting peace.

We write as Christian leaders from many churches in Canada to encourage our Government in the pursuit of peace in Afghanistan. We share with you and all Canadians of good will the desire for peace and stability in Afghanistan. As churches, we are committed to protecting human life, promoting human dignity, working for justice, practicing forgiveness, and building peace and reconciliation. These commitments are part of our vision of living out the Good News of God in Jesus Christ…

Canada’s Role in Afghanistan – June 25, 2007

We write to you keenly aware of the challenges which face Canada in addressing our international responsibilities in the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan. We recognize the tremendous complexity of the situation, and the desperate need for a peaceful future for a people beleaguered by war for a generation and more. We write also deeply conscious of your own faith and commitment as a Christian, and pledge to you our prayers as you discern the future direction of Canada’s role during the current conflict and the hoped for peace which must surely someday follow…

Canada’s Military Deployment in Afghanistan – January 16, 2003

In a letter to the Standing Committees on Foreign Affairs and International Trade and on National Defence and Veterans’ Affairs, the Council raises a series of questions relating to the decision by the Government of Canada to deploy Canadian troops to Afghanistan, with particular concern for Canada’s responsibilities under international law vis-à-vis the treatment of prisoners at the U.S. detention centre in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
