From the Desk of the General Secretary...
It can happen, it does happen, it happened to me. A member of my congregation collapsed in the middle of my Easter Sunday sermon one year.
The sunshine was pouring in the stained glass windows of the sanctuary, the scent of Easter lilies drenched the air and the church was full – row upon row, pew upon pew of believers and searchers come to hear about and experience the life-changing power of the Resurrection. Suddenly, right in the middle of the story chosen to accompany the proclamation of the Resurrection in the sermon, a congregant collapsed, turned a frightening shade of grey and we had to immediately call an ambulance. Minutes of waiting felt like hours as I asked the congregation to pray. The ambulance attendants strode down the aisle, the woman was cared for and loaded onto a stretcher and the ambulance pulled away to take her to the hospital.
I was left with a shocked and worried congregation, the reality that we did not know if our sister in Christ would live or not and the responsibility and imperative to preach the Resurrection in that situation.
But I was not alone. It was not just the sunshine and the perfume of the lilies that filled the Church that day, it was the power of the Holy Spirit. All of us gathered that Easter Sunday morning, in the sanctuary and in the hospital, were surrounded by the Truth that in life, in death, in life beyond death we are not alone. Jesus Christ, who knows so well the pain, suffering, rejection and death which we know, was Risen that Easter Sunday, is Risen this Easter Sunday, is Risen forever.
Thanks be to God. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.

The new President, three new Vice Presidents and the new Treasurer will serve the CCC and ecumenism in Canada from May 2012 to May 2015. Unity in Diversity.
WCC General Secretary in Canada
“Unity, understood as growing together, gives us hope for a life together, a life in solidarity, a life where we can be included and strengthened, becoming able to be more than we can be alone.” These words are representative of a vision shared by Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) during recent conversations with Christians in Canada.
In a series of visits to the Toronto offices of WCC member churches in Canada, and in a lecture and panel discussion on the evening of Wednesday 14 March, the general secretary explored contemporary hopes and challenges in the pursuit of Christian unity.
The evening consultation revisited that enduring ecumenical question, “The nature of the unity we seek.” In his presentation, the general secretary offered “10 theses” on the dynamics of Christian fellowship, dialogue, cooperation and common action.
The general secretaries of both the WCC and the CCC were able to meet throughout the visit to discuss the ecumenical situation in Canada.

CCC Deputy General Secretary as Part of Taiwan Election Observers
Peter Noteboom, Deputy Secretary of the CCC, was recently a part of a team of international election observers in Taiwan monitoring the Presidential and legislative elections, which took place on January 14, 2012. The election polls indicated a close race between the two leading Presidential candidates. Along with Taiwan's economic performance, the relationship with mainland China again played a critical role in the campaign. The observers were in Taiwan at the invitation of the International Committee for Fair Election in Taiwan, whose aim is to safeguard the gains in democracy and human rights and to ensure a peaceful environment, domestically and internationally, for both the elections process and the post-election period…

Address from the General Secretary: Church Leaders Annual Retreat
In active witness in the Week of Prayer For Christian Unity, the national leaders of the member denominations of The Canadian Council of Churches, representing in those member denominations 85% of the Christians of Canada, recently met for their Retreat together. This is an annual gathering, facilitated by The Canadian Council of Churches, in which such national Christian leaders as the Moderator of The United Church of Canada, The Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, the Commissioner of The Salvation Army and the General Secretary of The Mennonite Church Canada meet together in an informal, retreat setting. They deepen their relationships with each other, discuss the issues of concern in the Church and the World and pray with each other for all of the world's peoples. They build relationships for the future, they build relationships for a more just, sustainable and peaceful society; they build relationships for a better Canada for all people.
In their unity in diversity they are unique and they are united in compassion.
Yours in faith,
The Rev. Dr. Karen Hamilton

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Comes to an End: Looking Towards 2013!
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has just concluded with this statement from the World Council of Churches (WCC):
Despite all the divides and divisions, churches and congregations observed the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in the month of January, with a profound theme for this year, “We will all be changed by the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ” (cf. 1 Cor 15:51-58).
Celebrated in the northern hemisphere in from January 18-25 and in the southern hemisphere at Pentecost, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (WPCU) is jointly sponsored by the World Council of Churches and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. Each year a different Christian context is chosen to develop the materials – this year from Poland – and then they are adapted for local celebrations around the world.
Each year the Canadian Council of Churches works to help adapt these resources for Canadian churches by contributing to, designing and distributing them. We hope you find them useful and would love to hear some of your feedback! Please let us know what you did to celebrate!
Did you have a special service on Sunday or perhaps did you devote a part of your regular Sunday service to prayers for Christian unity? Did you order and use the WPCU resources directly from the CCC? Were they useful? What else could be done to help you celebrate this important date in the Christian calendar?
Please email your responses to cox@councilofchurches.ca or feel free to let us know via our Facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Canadian-Council-of-Churches/149853111692544
