As communities of faith in Canada, linked with brothers and sisters of faith throughout the Americas, we call upon you to create not simply a trade agreement, but a framework for a more neighbourly economy.
Prior to the WWSD held in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Commission on Justice and Peace of the Canadian Council of Churches and KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives sent a letter to Prime Minister Jean Chrétien setting out a proposed "Framework for Sustainable Communities".

As church, environmental, First Nations and international development leaders, we are compelled to express deep moral concern with Canada's role in promoting an energy path that the world's most distinguished scientists conclude is dangerous and unsustainable.
We propose an alternative - that Canada takes a leadership role during international talks ... then develops an energy policy that supports this agreement. Climate protection policies must determine sustainable energy policies.
